Yacht Clubs on Long Beach Island – LBI racing – Youth sailing
| Boating on Long Beach Island |
Long Beach Island has a number of Yacht Clubs. These are generally places for serious boaters. Each club has it’s own personality. For the most part, they all have a number of things in common
-
They want members who will participate in the club events and aren’t just looking for a place to dock their boat.
-
Youth programs and junior memberships to encourage seamanship and sailing
-
A serious social schedule consisting of cocktail hours, dinner parties, barbecues and other events
-
Facilities available for rental by club members, usually in the off season.
-
A strong sense of tradition tempered with adaptation to changing times. Many of the clubs on LBI have had women Commodores which would have been unheard of 20 years ago. However there are fairly strict protocols to be observe red especially at events such as the season commissioning. Most events will have a dress code that you are expected to follow.
-
Good seamanship is expected in boat handling and securing your boat in your slip.
Some of the clubs are a little more family oriented than others. Generally you will need someone to sponsor your membership and invite you to an event or two. Make sure that the club is a good fit. Also, each club will have a tendency toward a particular type of boat. Some will be oriented toward sailing while others are predominately power boaters.
