About Long Beach Island

The origins of the Jersey Devil are not exactly on the Island. Rather they lie in Leed’s Point which is about 10 miles south of Holgate. Supposedly a woman named Mother Leed was having her 13th child. Weary of children she exclaimed that she wanted a devil instead. The baby arrived and was indeed a devil and promptly killed some of the people in the room and then flew out the chimney.   Since then there have been strange occurrences near that area of the Pines

Get Lucy – The Tuckerton Wireless.

In the early days of radio, there was a huge antenna located in the marshes just off of Mystic Islands. That is across the bay from the southern end of the island. Supposedly the Germans sent a message during the early days of World War One that said “get Lucy”. Supposedly this was the order for a German Submarine to sink the Lusitainia.  The tower itself was a masterpiece of engineering rising 820 feet. As late as the 1990’s. you could see huge concrete blocks in the marsh that were the remnants of the guy wire anchors.

There is an excellent website showing the history and details of the tower  including it’s construction and eventual demolition. You might also want to check out a painting of the tower.
