The Barnegat Light Museum and Gardens

Barnegat Light Museum and  Edith Duff Gwinn Gardens
5th Street and Central Avenue Barnegat Light

Visited and reviewed, Sept 2006

They have the original Fresnel lens from the Barnegat Lighthouse on display along with numerous photographs. In addition there are items from the whaling industry, fishing industry and the grand hotels such as the Sunset and Oceanic that once graced the town. The museum website has some excellent early photographs of Barnegat City.  The museum is open June through September.

The museum is housed in what was formerly a one room schoolhouse. A massive cast iron stove sits in one corner of the room. Opposite is the original lens from the Barnegat Lighthouse. The lens itself is worth a trip to the museum. They have some of the original china from the Oceanic Hotel and the Sunset Hotel. There is a cabinet with books of historical photographs.

The museum is supported in large part by visitor donations.

If you go, check out the post office boxes in the little room off the north vestibule. It’s worth taking some time to stroll the gardens outside. It is a pleasant, relaxing experience. When we visited there were a variety of butterflies drawn to several of the plants.

Keep in mind that the museum has some limited hours. Check beforehand to see when they will be open.

If you visit the museum, take notice of the Haddock House across the street. This is one of the more eclectic buildings on the Island and it has a colorful history. (it is now a private residence!!)
